Bazillion Book Drive Introducing Project to Local Churches

Here is some information your District Bazillion Book Drive Team can use to connect local churches to this project.

Send to all congregations and District leaders in February. Edit so that it best fits your District’s context.

Your congregation is invited to join other North Alabama United Methodist congregations to collect a bazillion new children’s books!

The Bazillion Book Drive will be our 2016 Annual Conference mission project. This project was conceived by the North Alabama Conference Ministry with the Poor Operational Team as a way to allow each congregation to make a difference in the lives of children in their community—not just during the three days of Annual Conference, but year round!

The goal is for churches in our District to work together to collect as many new children’s books for children 3rd grade and younger as we can. The books will be distributed to agencies, churches and other groups in our area that work with children who are in under-resourced communities or who are living below the poverty line.

This project will be different than previous Annual Conference mission projects. Instead of filling the Von Braun Center in Huntsville full of new children’s books during Annual Conference in June, the plan is for our District to hold a Bazillion Book Big Event right here in our District this spring to sort the collected books, celebrate this collection, and distribute the books to the approved agencies and ministries in our area.

We are focusing on collecting new books for children 3rd grade and younger because statistics tell us that children who are not reading at grade level by the 3rd grade have little chance of graduating from high school. Additionally, statistics tell us that 80% of children in under-resourced communities are not reading at grade level.

Every child deserves a new book. We are excited about this opportunity to make a difference to under-resourced communities in the name of Jesus Christ. Stay tuned for more details as to how your congregation can participate!

Send during late February and March as you are recruiting agencies to apply for books.

Does you church have a ministry working with children 3rd grade and younger who are in under-resourced communities or who are living below the poverty line? Do you know of a nonprofit, school, library, daycare center or other organization in your area that serves under-resourced children? If so, invite the leaders of that ministry or organization to complete the online application to receive new books from the Bazillion Book Drive. The application is online at Our District Bazillion Book Team will vet applications from within our District. The new books our churches collect will be distributed to these organizations to make a difference in the lives of the children they serve.

Every child deserves a new book!
